First slide:
Hello guys, we are group yellow, and our research topic is how relationship affects the well-being among college students. Today, we are going to present some of the findings of our research, and by doing that, we hope that everyone can know the importance of relationship and how we, as college students, can all maintain a good level of well-being.
Second slide:
So college. It is no doubt a transformative period as everyone here can probably feel it first-hand.
Whether it be the academic pressure, you know the deadlines, readings, and all, peer relationship, new responsibilities, and us having to prepare to enter the workforce, they are all new changes that came into our life since we got into college.
The fact is, some students cope well, but some don’t. Accordingly to some research, during 2020 to 2021 school year around 60% of all college students in the United States met at least one criteria of mental health disorders, including anxiety and depression. Although that was during the pandemic, this rate has not gone down significantly since then. Moreover, many students experience physical health issues associated with stress, substance use, and so on.
So given the prevalence of well-being issues among college students, we as a group decided that such a topic is worth exploring. But instead of focusing on multiple causes of well-being issues, we decided to talk about relationship.
Third slide:
Relationship is such an important mediator of well-being among us. By relationship, we mean the good one, the bad ones, the ones we have with our friends, peers, and teachers, and of course the ones we have with our families.
But anyway, research has found that social support helps lower the stress, that families and friends support can positively impact students’ academic success, increase the life satisfaction. When you have good relationships surround you, your overall life satisfaction is through the roof.
In contrary, bad relationships can drag you down, negatively affecting you in numerous aspects.
For those with severe mental health issues, relationships and regular social engagement can even prevent cases of self-harm and suicide.
What we’re really trying to say here is that relationship is the source of our life. We are humans, interdependent of others’ help, attentiveness, and love.
Fourth slide:
But many of us may come from another town, another city, another state, or even another country. As a result, we may experience loneliness. And when we do, it can lower our academic motivation, compromise our sleep quality, disrupt our emotional regulation, and ultimately leads to a lower quality of life.
Fifth slide:
So far, we have covered the importance of relationship and how it influences our life.
But what is lying beneath the surface of relationship really? We feel it is important as well to cover the factors that can negatively or positively influence relationship, which in turn affects our well-being.
So some of the factors that can negatively influence our relationship include excessive use of digital device, including our smartphone, Xbox, and PSP. Substance use or abuse can also do a number on our social relationships as we become unable to regulate our emotion and decisions during social interactions. Moreover, physical inactivity can harm relationships and well-being also because it basically means withdrawal. Another less obvious factor is financial stress, as one of the research we found suggest that financial stress like college debts and limited allowance from parents can negatively impact our well-being and the ability to form good relationships on campus.
There are positive factors as well, including physical exercise, regular, proactive socializing, and emotional intelligence. The first two seems obvious enough, you know, you get to release dopamine and endorphin during exercise which help with well-being. Plus you get to make friends and maintain relationships through tea sports. The last one, however, is a little confusing. Emotional intelligence basically means your ability to detect, identify, and utilize both your and others’ emotion in a way that facilitates benign social relationships. If you are interested, you can search for that term.
Sixth slide:
And the main body of our research was pretty much covered by the previous slides. In our conclusion and practical recommendation section, we gave some suggestions. But in lay terms, they are really just some of the coping strategies that college students can use to be healthy.
They include seeking out for peer support, campus program, regular yet proactive social engagement, meditation and physical exercise, and last but not least, regular medical check-ups.
Seventh slide:
And that is all we have for you guys. Thank you for listening, and we wish you the best health as a college student!
