For this assignment you must submit 2 documents:
- Part 1: Interview based research report
- Part 2: Secondary data research report
Part 1: Design qualitative study that uses interviews, collect data, and summarize results. For this assignment you need to develop an idea for an original marketing research that uses qualitative methods specifically interviews. You can select any research topic/project if it is related to marketing. Steps in the assignment:
- Define research problem (thematizing) – explain what is it that you want to find out with your interviews. Examples:
- What drives customer experience in luxury retail stores?
- How did spending habits change during Covid19 pandemic?
- What kind of changes would customers like to see with Google search?
- Develop an interview protocol that includes the following:
- Sample – who will you interviewed, what are limitations to sampling frame.
- Procedures – how are interviews going to be conducted (e.g. online, phone, in person), how long are interviews, are participants compensated, are interviews going to be recorded, type of interview (unstructured, semi-structured or fully structured)
- Questions – depending on the type of interview you will need to create a list of questions that may range from very specific (structured interview) to very broad guiding questions (unstructured). Develop a list of questions that you plan to ask participants. Suggested number of questions beyond demographic questions is 6 to 10 questions for semi-structured approach.
- Conduct between 5 and 10 interviews and either take notes or record interviews (make sure to ask for consent if you are recording)
- Transcribe interviews if they were recorded. If they were not recorded and you were taking notes, make sure that notes are well organized
- Analyzing
- Identifying themes of interest
- Developing coding systems
- Verifying
- Going back to data and literature to ensure that the results are correctly interpreted
- Develop a report – create a summary of results of the interviews. Try to explain what you found out about your research problem
Part 2: Using library resources identify one or more datasets or data reports and create a summary of results. Steps in the assignment:
- Use NYU libraries marketing resources and identify datasets or data reports regarding a topic of your interest. Explain why you selected this data.
- Develop a one-page summary of the data:
- Where does data come from?
- What was the purpose of it?
- How was it collected and who collected it?
- Are there any obvious problems with the data?
- What are major findings and implications?
- How could a company use this data to improve its operations?
